THC infused gummy bears products send senior high school students to hospital

Growing concern among parents about the availability of THC infused products at shops across the island.

This comes in the wake of reports of students falling ill and in at least one case, having to be taken to hospital for treatment after ingesting these products.

They come in the form of confectioneries, including gummy bears, hard candy, chocolate and popcorn among others.

In most cases, these products are restricted for sale to individuals who are eighteen years of age or older.

However, this rule is said to be not rigidly enforced. Also, there is the fact that there are senior school students who have attained the age of eighteen.

These items, were told, are being brought into schools by students and shared among their peers.

One parent contacted TNN to highlight the issue after a student at her daughter’s school fell ill from using these products and had to seek treatment at hospital after experiencing negative side effects.

Since then, checks by TNN revealed similar incidents have occurred in at least two other schools.

Reports reaching TNN from a reliable source indicating a male student at the senior high school has been suspended for suppling these products, with recommendation of expulsion to the Ministry of Education, TNN await a response.

Some of these products which are sold over the counter contain Delta 8 tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as Delta-8 THC.

How prevalent are these products in Bermuda? The product images attached were all taken at local stores.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, “It is important for consumers to be aware that Delta-8 THC products have not been approved by the FDA for safe use in any context.”

“They may be marketed in ways that put the public health at risk and should be kept out of reach of children…”

“TNN has reached out to the Ministry of Education as well as the Ministry of Health for comment but neither ministry has responded nor has the Bermuda Police Service.”
