In the face of housing insecurity, domestic violence, and increased violence against women, Bermuda’s Teen Haven has remained a sanctuary for women and families in need. Roxanne Christopher recently provided an update to TNN News on Teen Haven’s future and the challenges they’re working to overcome.
“We recently met with Premier David Burt and his team this wasn’t an easy meeting by any means, but we made progress,” Christopher said, reflecting on a pivotal meeting with Bermuda’s leaders, including the Attorney General, Ministers Michael Weeks and Tinee Furbert, Chief of Staff Mr. Talamack, and the Haven trustees. “We had heartfelt conversations, and while everyone had a position, we were able to find middle ground and commit to moving forward.” The next day, they received an extension from Magistrate’s Court, along with a mandate for arbitration—a crucial opportunity for continued dialogue.
Christopher expressed gratitude to the Bermuda community, whose support bolstered Teen Haven during a challenging time. “We are steadily preparing our facility to welcome women and families into a safe, trusted environment. As I always tell our residents, ‘This may be your today, but it doesn’t have to be your tomorrow.’ We want them to feel protected, surrounded by people invested in their best interests.”
Since its founding, Teen Haven has adapted to meet the changing needs of its residents. Originally focused on young teen mothers, today’s demographic ranges from 19 to late 30s, reflecting the evolving societal issues of violence, addiction, and family challenges. “The need is greater than ever,” Christopher shared. “We’re one of the few places where mothers and children can stay together. With the rise in families facing special needs, we’re also expanding our services to address autism, ADHD, and other learning challenges, training our staff to provide the necessary support.”
In light of Sunshine Lead’s closure, there is heightened concern about resources for women and families. Asked if Teen Haven can continue its mission, Christopher responded confidently, “Absolutely. This is our personal commitment. We’re not in this for any reward; we’re here to serve.” She emphasized the organization’s resilience despite scrutiny, crediting the public’s support as a source of strength. “If not for Bermuda’s backing, our wider community might not understand the challenges we face. We’ve been working toward a solution for nearly two years, and I’m thankful the trustees now recognize the value of continuing this vital resource.”
Christopher’s final message highlighted the significance of a state of execution with renewed hope. “There’s willingness on both sides to work together. The trustees, as long-standing board members, have a vested interest in Teen Haven’s success, and they see how vital this partnership is to Bermuda. We’re looking forward to 2025 and what it holds for Teen Haven and our collaboration with the Haven trustees.”
Teen Haven remains dedicated to providing a safe haven for women and families, strengthened by a community determined to safeguard its future.
