Hamilton, Bermuda – Emotions ran high in Supreme Court yesterday as the sentencing hearing for Calin Maybury was unexpectedly put on hold Maybury previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving in connection to a tragic crash that claimed the life of 22-year-old TroNi Robinson Burgess.
The accident occurred on South Shore Road in Southampton on July 28, 2022, the first day of the Annual Cup Match Classic, forever altering the lives of those involved. During the hearing, Justice Allan Richards adjourned the proceedings as questions arose surrounding the estimated speed and driving conditions on the night of the crash. The court deferred to the investigating police officer, whose testimony and findings are still being scrutinized by defense lawyer Marc Daniels before a final decision on sentencing can be made.
But it was the heart-wrenching victim impact statement delivered by Nicole Robinson, TroNi’s mother, that left the courtroom in silence.
“She was my miracle child,” Nicole said tearfully. “After struggling for years to conceive, TroNi was my blessing, my one and only. I’ll never see her walk across a graduation stage. I’ll never be able to hold her child in my arms. I’ll never see her in a wedding dress or hear her call me from a new job or new home. All of that was stolen from me.”
Nicole, now beyond childbearing age, described how the loss has left her in emotional turmoil, plagued by sleepless nights, and now relying on medication just to rest. In hear statement she urged the court: “Please, deal with him as harshly as the law allows. My daughter deserves justice.”
At the end of the hearing, the court announced the matter would be adjourned to a later date. Calin Maybury was remanded into custody at Westgate Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.
