Suspected Murderer Apprehended on Property Tied to Police Commissioner

BREAKING NEWS : The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) on Friday confirmed the apprehension of Jeremiah Tyrell, the suspect wanted in connection with the May 1st Legends murder, a tragic incident in which five individuals were shot, resulting in two fatally.

Since the night of that mass shooting, police have launched an island-wide manhunt and repeatedly asked the public for assistance in locating Tyrell. After two months on the run, the suspect was discovered hiding in a remote shed located in Hamilton Parish.

What TNN has now uncovered is deeply troubling: the property where Tyrell was discovered belongs to none other than the Commissioner of Police and his brother in which the Commissioner reside on the estate.

This revelation has sent shockwaves across the island and raised a series of urgent and unanswered questions:
• How was a murder suspect able to hide—possibly for weeks—on the property of the island’s highest-ranking law enforcement officer?
• Who brought him there?
• Who was helping him survive, and more critically, who treated his injuries?

Tyrell was reportedly suffering from a gunshot wound, believed to be sustained during the May 1st incident. TNN has learned from credible sources that the bullet was removed from Tyrell’s body at some point prior to his arrest. This indicates someone with medical knowledge likely assisted him while he was in hiding.

The level of access needed to place and sustain someone on that specific parcel of land also raises red flags. This was not a random hiding spot—it is believed that someone with intimate knowledge of the property facilitated his presence there.

TNN reached out to the Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons with several key queries:
1. Was he aware that Jeremiah Tyrell was on the property?
2. If not, when did he become aware?
3. Who had access to this property in recent weeks?
4. Why was no public statement issued acknowledging the suspect’s capture on the police commissioner’s-owned land?

The Commissioner issued a brief response to TNN posted below:

I want to address TNN’s inquiry directly and transparently. This aligns with my commitment to building trust and accountability with the public.

This is family-owned land that has been passed down through generations. It’s largely undeveloped, overgrown, and frankly, I haven’t visited it for several years.

Over the decades, various family members and businesses have used portions of this property, but there’s no regular monitoring or oversight, of who might access it.

The reality is that this largely undeveloped, unattended property could be accessed and used by anyone without the knowledge of the family. That’s what appears to have happened here.

I had no knowledge of the individual’s presence on this property.

The first I learned of his apprehension, was through official police channels after he was arrested and taken to hospital.

As to the timeline and circumstances of how he got there, how long he was there or whether anyone assisted him, these are questions that are part of the active investigation.

It would not be appropriate for me to speculate about evidence or findings that are still being reviewed by the investigating team.

What I can tell you is this.

I have full confidence in our investigative process. The officers working this case are conducting a thorough and professional investigation, and they have my complete support. Any suggestion that there was some kind of oversight failure or that this reflects poorly on law enforcement is simply not supported by the facts.

I appreciate TNN’s commitment to transparency, and I hope this statement provides the clarity you’re seeking. The investigation will continue to follow the evidence wherever it leads, and justice will be served.

This leaves the public asking:
Why didn’t the Commissioner proactively disclose the property connection when the arrest was made?
Why wasn’t a statement released immediately to address concerns of conflict of interest, transparency, and accountability?
And most importantly—who will be held accountable for harboring a fugitive on such a sensitive property?

As this investigation continues, TNN will keep pressing for answers. The public deserves to know who helped a suspected murderer evade capture, who treated his wounds, and who played a role in shielding him from justice.

This is not speculation. These are questions based on confirmed facts—and the people of Bermuda expect and deserve full transparency.
