Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre (BCHC) is thrilled to announce that summer camp training for the 2024 SunSmart Accreditation Programme is now open. As the sun shines brighter and the days get warmer, it’s crucial to protect our children from harmful UV rays. The SunSmart programme equips camp organizers and counsellors with the knowledge and tools to create a safe and sun-conscious environment for campers.
Why SunSmart?
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 5 blistering sunburns candouble one‘s risk of developing skin cancer later in life. TheSunSmart Accreditation Programme ensures that camps prioritize sun safety, reducing the chances of sunburn and long-term skin damage.
What Is SunSmart Accreditation?
SunSmart Accreditation is awarded to camps that:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of sun-safe behaviors.
2. Ensure kids can have a sun-safe camp experience.
3. Have a written Sun Protection Policy.
4. Pass a spot check with their camp in action.
How to Register
Registration for the SunSmart Accreditation Programme opens on April 1st. Camp organizers and counsellors can attend one of the following training sessions at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre:
Wednesday, June 19th, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Tuesday, June 25th, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Thursday, June 27th, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Attention to previously accredited camps: Camps that received accreditation in 2022 are due to renew their accreditation this year. For all other camps and/or summer programmes, you can check your current status at www.chc.bm/sun-smart.
