Sunrise Blaze Destroys Mini-van Near Lopes Supermarket in Somerset — Arson Suspected

Somerset, Bermuda — At sunrise this morning, residents near Main Road, Somerset awoke to the alarming sight of thick smoke and flames coming from the parking area of the old Lopes Supermarket. Witnesses quickly discovered that a mini-van parked near the store was engulfed in flames.

Emergency services were promptly called, with both the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) and Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS) responding swiftly to the scene. Despite their efforts, the mini-van was completely destroyed by the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

This incident marks the second suspicious fire in the area in just under a month. TNN understands that four weeks ago, a boat located nearby was also set alight under unclear circumstances. The proximity and timing of the two events have sparked concerns among locals and authorities alike, raising the specter of an arsonist targeting property in the Somerset area.

A major investigation has now been launched. Fire detectives are currently examining the scene and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby buildings as part of their efforts to identify any potential suspects.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. “The community’s help is vital in cases like this,” said one police spokesperson. “If you saw anything unusual around sunrise, or in recent days, please contact us.”
