Somerset (1st innings) 404, St George’s (1st innings) 1-1
Somerset all but put paid to any visions St George’s had of wrestling away the Cup Match trophy after an opening day that saw the champions pile on a massive amount of runs and misery at Wellington Oval.
Middle-order batsman Dion Stovell was the chief architect in enabling Somerset to amass a mamoth 404.
Stovell became the first Bermudian to score centuries in consecutive Cup Matches, as his 139 followed the 111 not out he achieved last year at Somerset.
But he was not alone in the run-scoring department as opener Terryn Fray (70) and wicket-keeper/batsman Steven Bremar (64) each got half-centuries, while Alje Richardson (44) came close to making it a triumvirate.
A burst of hope was raised in the St George’s camp when they claimed the early wickets of Chris Douglas (3) and Tre Manders (11), to had Somerset in a bit of bother at 36-for2, but such proved to be a fleeting illusion, as the west enders recovered to reach 94 before the third wicket fell, that of Richardson.
It was then time for a repeat first innings performance from Stovell, who ravaged the St George’s attack in moving towards a second hundred, only to be temporarily halted when he was hit on the right after reaching 48.
Stovell went off the field temporarily for treatment, before returning to complete the demolition job he’d started.
St George’s eight bowlers that were used toiled for little reward, with Zeko Burgess and Allan Douglas Jr the best of the lot, taking 4-for-71 and 4-for-91 respectively.
Sent in to bat with but one over left for the day, the challengers got off to the most disastrous of starts when Treadwell Gibbons was bowled by the second ball he faced from fast bowler Kamau Leverock for a duck.
At the close of play no St GHeorge’s batsman had gotten off the mark, with the one run on the board there on account of a no ball.
Somerset will be gunning for an innings victory on Day 2, with hope that a deteriorating wicket works to their benefit.
Conversely, St George’s have once again been forced to battle from behind, with victory seeming a foregone conclusion.
