St George’s enjoyed fair success during the much delayed opening session of Cup Match as they made major in-roads into Somerset’s batting line-up.
The challengers’ pace attack struck early, before making way for the slow bowlers to advance as the game neared tea, with the holders reduced to 147 for 4.
Zeko Burgess struck first, needing only two balls to account for Terryn Fray for a duck. The Somerset skipper nibbled at a ball that left him slightly, edging to his gleeful counterpart, Sinclair Smith.
Initial hope of further success, was soon dismissed by Kamau Leverock and colt Jaiden Manders (28), who went about flaying the attack both in front of and behind the wicket. The latter produced several brave cuts off Luke Horan, before trying and failing to drive in front and being caught at long-on by Isaiah O’Brien.
Joined by Tre Manders, Kamau Leverock continued his aggression to all parts, forcing Smith to go to his spinners.
The tactic yielded immediate dividends as Delray Rawlins’ first over accounted for the wicket of Leverock, who lofted a full toss toward Horan and long-on, with the youngster climbing the ladder to take a fine overhead catch, removing the opener for 47.
Manders carried on with vice-captain Dominic Sabir, but the pace slowed, as the slow bowling tied down matters.
Just after advancing into the 40s, Manders was undone by a ball from off-spinner Nzari Paynter that bounced and turned into the right-hander, trapping him lbw.
Somerset went into tea with Dominic Sabir and Dion Stovell at the wicket.
