In what St George’s supporters hope is an indication of what’s to come at week’s end St George’s future Stars easily dispatched Somerset by six wickets during this year’s version of Colts Cup Match.
Captain Keegan Jones led from the front, producing a devastating spell of seam bowling.
Inserting himself as the fourth bowler used Jones derailed the home team’s batting.
Jones halted an opening partnership that had produced 97 runs, bowling Patrick Dill for 41 and proceeded to devour the middle and late order, finishing with figures of eight for 38 from 12.4 overs.
Even Callum McFarlane (62) who top-scored for Somerset, failed to escape the wrath of Jones.
Of the challengers remaining batsmen, only Darrien Gibbons (16) managed to achieve double figures.
“Keegan bowled extremely well today,” said coach Ryan Steede of his skipper’s achievement. “Obviously eight wickets is commendable.
“He deserves the respect for that. It shows why we picked him to lead us.
“He had a rough start at first, but we had a little pep talk at the break and he turned things around.
“So I was very impressed with his bowling. He was using variations and that’s what helped get his wickets.”
Turning to bat St George’s started cautiously, with Logan Jones (79) and Duvonte Binns (1) putting on 33 for the first wicket, before Binns fell to the leg-spin of Callum McIntosh.
Enrique Minks (0) followed quickly _ another victim of McIntosh _ but there would be no more joy for the West Enders.
Shane Robinson (50) joined Jones and the pair launched into the Somerset attack, scoring at will, while drawing rapturous applause from the sizeable crowd.
The pair out on 98 runs for the third wicket, moving the total to 131, when Robinson was bowled by Amari Davis.
Logan Jones fell four runs later, but by then the result was a formality.
Keegan Jones was duly named the games Most Valuable Player for his bowling exploits.
St George’s have now held the trophy since winning it back in 2022.
