Spring into the Arts Festival Concludes with Significantly Increased Participation

The Department of Education’s annual Spring into the Arts festival recently concluded its Performing Arts Showcases, raising over $11,000 to support arts education programs and resources across Bermuda’s public schools.

This year’s festival saw a significantly increased number of participants, with over 600 students from 25 public and private schools showcasing a wide variety of dance, musical, and theatrical performances. Each student will receive a certificate of recognition from the Acting Arts Education Officer, Mrs. Shannon Rose-Robinson, and the Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Kalmar Richards, both of whom delivered remarks at the Showcases.

Despite not having a performance, CedarBridge Academy (CBA) students contributed significantly behind the scenes. Under the guidance of Mrs. Shoa Wolfe, CBA students worked as stage crew, while CBA prefects, managed by Mrs. Latoya Francis, served as ushers. Additionally, culinary arts students, directed by Mrs. Joanne Anderson, provided baked goods for festival patrons. These contributions enabled students to earn valuable community service hours.

The festival paid special tribute to several educators who have made significant contributions to arts education in Bermuda. A surprise tribute was presented to Mrs. Patricia Nesbitt at the Senior Spring into the Arts showcase, while musical tributes honored Mr. Anthony Wolffe, Mrs. Persis Butler, and Mrs. Gita Blakeney-Saltus.

Additionally, a special presentation from COE Richards and musical tribute recognized retired Arts Education Officer Dr. Shangri-La Durham-Thompson. A posthumous tribute was also performed for the late Darlene Hartley, recognizing her contributions to the performing arts in Bermuda with a plaque presented to her husband Mr. Norris Hartley.

The success of Spring into the Arts is a testament to the dedication of teachers, students, and the wider community.

Each night featured a different MC: Mrs. Patricia Nesbitt, Mr. Gavin Smith, Mr. Jonari Smith (DJ Fury), and Mr. Anthony Lee.

Local businesses, including The Phoenix Stores, The Waterfront Group, The Loren, Thyme Restaurant, J&B’s Pizza, and Il Pomodoro Pizzeria generously donated raffle prizes, while Aspen Bermuda Limited provided a monetary contribution.

Footage from all four showcases is available on the YouTube Channels of Bermuda Public Schools and Channel 82.

Commissioner Richards said: “Once again we are celebrating another successful Spring into the Arts. I am especially grateful for our community partners who have been generous with their support and I commend our staff and wonderfully talented students.”

“The four Spring into the Arts showcases provided a snapshot of the wonderful learning experiences and partnership programs that nurture, develop, and support the performing arts in our primary, middle, and senior schools,” said Mrs. Shannon Rose-Robinson, Acting Arts Education Officer. “I am confident that the funds raised this year will help to enhance the existing offerings and provide supplemental resources to further support Arts education.”

She added: “The talent, enthusiasm, and energy we witnessed on stage was absolutely phenomenal! Our music, dance, and theater teachers are to be commended for their vision, dedication, and commitment to growing the Arts in Bermuda,”
