Sports Minister congratulates Bermuda’s Olympic athletes

The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, Sen. Owen K. Darrell, JP, extended congratulations to Bermuda’s Olympic athletes who have demonstrated true grit and heart, and turning in impressive personal performances, following the first week of the Paris Games.

The public will note that eight (8) Bermudians are part of the 2024 Olympic Team, they include:

  • Athletics: Jah-Nhai Perinchief – Athletics
  • Emma Harvey, Jack Harvey – Aquatics
  • Dara Alizadeh – Rowing
  • Adriana Penruddocke – Sailing; and
  • Dame Flora Duffy, Erica Hawley, Tyler Smith – Triathlon

Minister Darrell expressed his pride at the Olympic debuts of Harvey siblings Emma and Jack, noting that this is an exciting milestone in their swimming careers. He also recognised Dara Alizadeh and Adriana Penruddocke for their representation of Bermuda on the world stage.

And the Minister in particular highlighted Bermuda’s Triathletes for their commendable performances at the 2024 Paris Games.

Last Wednesday, three of Bermuda’s elite athletes, including Gold Medallist, Dame Flora Duffy, showcased their skill and determination in the women’s and men’s Olympic Triathlon finals.

Erica Hawley who made her Olympic debut had a strong finish in the women’s triathlon, placing 41st.

And Tyler Smith showed his resilience during the men’s final.

Minister Darrell said, “Bermuda was truly represented on the world stage in front of millions last Wednesday, and I want to extend a huge congratulations to Flora, Tyler and Erica. While she finished fifth, Flora put in an outstanding performance which reflects her enduring spirit. We also recognize Erica’s hard work and perseverance, and we eagerly anticipate her future achievements in the sport. And even though Tyler faced challenges during his triathlon event, the entire island celebrated the commitment he has shown throughout his journey. So, we are very proud of each of our Paris Olympians, and I join all of Bermuda in celebrating their tremendous accomplishment.”

It should be noted that Minister Darrell is currently in Paris attending the Olympic Games to support the remaining performances of the Bermuda team.
