Southampton Rangers President Vows to Keep Building Community After Shooting

Following last night’s gunfire outside the Southampton Rangers Sports Club, club president Darren “Butch” Buchall is calling the incident a tragedy and pledging to continue his efforts to make the club a positive force in the community.

“This is just heartbreaking,” Burchall said. “When our patrons or one of us are attacked in this manner, we don’t take it lightly. We will cooperate fully to get to the bottom of this.”

Since taking over leadership earlier this summer, Burchall and his committee have been working to shed the club’s past negative reputation and transform it into a hub for the community. The cricket team remains unbeaten this season, and the club has launched youth programs, hosted a summer camp, and partnered with St. Ann’s Church to expand outreach.

“We’ve had a really positive atmosphere,” Burchall said. “Members are enthusiastic, and we’ve been putting on events for all demographics—from senior citizens’ teas to community partnerships. We’re about bringing the community together.”

Burchall expressed frustration that “perpetrators from outside” would commit acts of violence on club grounds. He said the shooting underscores the need to reach young men in the wider community and address deeper social issues. Plans are already in motion for a restorative practice course involving about 20 community members.

The president acknowledged that changing the stigma surrounding the club is a process. “Every event we hold, I want people to leave saying they felt safe and had a good time,” he said. “Something like this won’t make us take a step back—we’re going to keep moving forward and building this community.”

The incident remains under police investigation, and authorities are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
