Southampton Man Denies Samurai Sword and Wounding Charges in Magistrates’ Court

A 55-year-old Southampton man appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning and denied charges related to the possession of a bladed article and unlawfully wounding another person.

Mtume Hart, of Southampton, pleaded not guilty to two offences allegedly committed on June 21 in Southampton Parish.

•The first charge alleges that Hart was in possession of a bladed article, namely a samurai sword with a blade exceeding three inches in length, in a public place without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

•The second charge alleges that Hart unlawfully wounded Darreana Burchall during the same incident.

Carrington Mahoney, appearing for the Department of Public Prosecutions office, told the court that the matter is a complex family dispute involving several members of the same family.

Senior Magistrate Maxine Anderson granted Hart bail in the amount of $5,000. As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered to have no contact with the complainant or any prosecution witnesses.

The matter was adjourned for mention and Hart is scheduled to return to court on July 20 at 9:30 a.m.
