TNN INVESTIGATION: Last week, TNN News reported on allegations that Bermuda’s island-wide CCTV camera network is experiencing significant operational issues, with numerous cameras reportedly not functioning throughout the island.
One week ago a gunman fired shots at a group of people on the grounds of the Southampton Rangers Sports Club, thankfully no one was injured, the issue highlighted and revealed the CCTV cameras at the entrance and parking lot area of the club was not working.
Today, TNN can reveal additional information provided by sources familiar with the situation, who allege that the problems extend beyond cameras being offline.
According to sources, the CCTV system’s recording and playback capabilities are also reportedly experiencing serious failures. If these allegations are accurate, it could mean that even when incidents are captured on camera, the footage may not be properly recorded or available for later review by investigators.
Sources further allege that the system’s ability to retrieve and examine recorded footage has been compromised, raising concerns about its effectiveness as a public safety and crime-fighting tool.
These reported issues come despite the millions of dollars that have allegedly been invested in Bermuda’s CCTV infrastructure over the years through the Ministry of National Security.
The allegations raise important questions about the current state of the system and whether the public has been adequately informed about any ongoing operational challenges.
Last week, TNN submitted questions to the Minister of National Security via the Department of Communications and Information (DCI) regarding the reported issues affecting the CCTV network. As of the publication of this report, one week later, TNN has not received a response.
While the Ministry has not publicly confirmed the allegations, sources maintain that the reported failures are extensive and affect critical components of the surveillance system.
If confirmed, the alleged issues could have serious implications for law enforcement investigations, particularly in cases involving firearms, violent crime, and other major incidents where video evidence is often crucial.
TNN believes the public deserves transparency regarding the condition and effectiveness of a system that was implemented, in part, to enhance public safety and assist in criminal investigations.
The question remains: Will the Ministry of National Security address these allegations and provide an update on the current operational status of Bermuda’s CCTV network?
TNN will continue to seek answers and monitor developments surrounding this story.
