Somerset Cricket Club is heading into the 2026 Cup Match Classic full of confidence, with head coach Janeiro Tucker declaring that the defending champions have assembled a well-balanced squad capable of retaining the coveted trophy.
Speaking ahead of the Annual Cup Match Classic, which will be hosted at Somerset Cricket Club this week, Tucker said his selectors made key changes to strengthen an already formidable batting lineup while maintaining a quality bowling attack.
Now in his second year as head coach, Tucker said the decision to recall all-rounder Proctor was based on both his cricketing ability and the maturity he has shown throughout the season.
“We wanted to strengthen our batting,” Tucker explained. “Proctor gives us another quality batting option while also contributing with the ball. He’s worked hard, shown accountability for some of the things we spoke about earlier in the year, and he deserves his place back in the squad.”
Tucker acknowledged that Proctor had previously been left out, not because of his talent, but because of concerns over his mindset and approach to the game.
“It wasn’t about his ability,” Tucker said. “It was about his mindset. But he’s grown up, he’s taken responsibility, and he’s earned another opportunity. He’s been batting well all season and performed well for Cleveland, so we’re happy to have him back.”
The Somerset coach believes his side possesses one of the strongest batting lineups assembled in recent years and stressed that occupying the crease will be the key to victory.
“Our main focus is batting long,” he said. “If we bat the way we’re capable of, I don’t see them bowling us out twice. We’ve got the batting lineup to put big totals on the board.”
Turning his attention to challengers St. George’s Cricket Club, Tucker expects much of the same aggressive brand of cricket from the Eastern County side but believes Cup Match requires a different approach than the modern T20 game.
“St. George’s will probably come out looking to score quickly, but somebody has to be prepared to stay in and build an innings,” Tucker said. “Cup Match is a different format. It’s a red-ball game. You have to play proper cricket shots. You can’t rely on swinging at everything and expect it to work over two days.”
While acknowledging the attacking abilities of St. George’s big hitters, Tucker expressed confidence in Somerset’s bowling unit.
“Our bowling attack is quality,” he said. “We believe we can put them under pressure, bowl them out, and if we bat well, put ourselves in a position to do it again. Our focus is sticking to our strategy and playing disciplined cricket.”
As Somerset prepares to defend the coveted Cup Match trophy on home soil, Tucker says the squad is focused, motivated, and determined to keep Bermuda’s most prestigious cricket prize in the West End.
The 2026 Cup Match Classic gets underway this week Thursday and Friday at Somerset Cricket Club, where thousands of spectators are expected to witness another chapter in Bermuda’s greatest sporting rivalry between Somerset and St. George’s.
