Somerset Coach Confident Ahead of Cup Match: “We’re Playing Our Game to Win”

In the wake of the highly anticipated Somerset Cup match team announcement, Coach Janerio Tucker sat down with TNN’s Trevor Lindsay last evening to break down the team selections, strategy shifts, and his outlook heading into the battle at St. George’s.

Three In, Three Out – But It’s About the Bigger Picture

When asked about the three changes made to this year’s lineup, Coach Tucker was quick to clarify: “I don’t really classify them as changes. These are seasoned players—guys who can bat anywhere in the order. It’s about balance and preparing for the future.”

With a tactical eye on the pitch in St. George’s, the coaching team made a calculated decision to beef up the batting order.

“We had to analyze the game plan. We felt we didn’t need to bulk up on bowlers because we believe we have enough strength there already,”Tucker explained. “Instead, we wanted more batsmen to strengthen the batting. This isn’t just about now—it’s about being ready so we’re not scrambling with five or six changes in one season down the road.”

•A Tough Call on Proctor

One of the more controversial omissions was Proctor, a player who’s been in good cricketing form.Tucker addressed the decision head-on, making it clear that the move wasn’t about skill.

“Proctor didn’t get dropped for his ability—it’s the other stuff. Today wasn’t a good day for him in the field. He did some dumb stuff, and we’ve got to maintain a standard. This committee, along with the skipper, holds players to a high level. Proctor just didn’t meet that standard this time.”

Still,Tucker left the door open for the talented player’s return, encouraging him to pick himself up and focus on improving the mental side of his game.

•Eyes on the Prize, Not the Opponent

As for their rivals,Tucker offered a confident—almost dismissive—assessment of St. George’s.

“Me personally, I don’t really worry about St. George’s,” he said bluntly. “Once I set my team up to play a certain way, then that’s how we’re going to play. We’re focused on executing our game to beat them. Bottom line: the Cup’s coming back to Somerset. For real. That’s it.”

With high expectations, a revamped lineup, and a clear strategic vision, Coach Janeiro Tucker and the Somerset camp are locked in—and ready for war on the pitch.
