Social media post jeopardizing people lives says Police Commissioner Simons

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS), is aware of a number of social media posts accusing individuals of providing information which may have led to criminals being incarcerated.

In the strongest possible terms, I condemn this activity. It is dangerous and has the propensity to put the lives of individuals at risk. All the more, where inaccuracies exist.

An individual has been identified and steps are being taken at various levels both locally and internationally, to address this situation and put an end to it.

“Rest assured, the BPS has robust systems in place to protect the identity of members of the public who do the right thing in assisting us provide closure to families whose loved ones have become victims of violent crime.

So strict is this system, that not even I, as Commissioner of Police, am privy to information regarding the identities of individuals who cooperate with police investigations.

Further, there are in place, measures in keeping with international policing best practise, to protect members of the community who assist in bringing criminals to justice.

This ranges from advice and putting safety plans in place at the lower end, to prosecution for witness intimidation, and if required ,where an individual gives evidence in court, witness protection at the higher end.

I wish to assure the public, any information provided to police is treated with strictest of confidence.”

The BPS advises that should you receive these posts and the accompanying images, you immediately delete and not share. Sharing them only further jeopardises a person’s life especially if the information is wrong.

People can only have one of two views on this matter.  One, from a place that loves Bermuda, wants the best for her and abhors these posts and all they represent. The other, from a place that doesn’t care about Bermuda or who they hurt. There is no middle ground.

To be clear, the actions of this individual impacts all of us. Apathy is clearly a step in the wrong direction.”
