Smith Destroys Field for First Derby Title

Tyler Smith carved through what was billed as a balanced field, slicing up the competition early before sauntering to his first Bermuda Day Half-Marathon crown.

Pegged as a triathlete, Smith proved he could dazzle solo, too, as he left no doubt about his distance-running credentials.

Smith set out from Somerset in a five-man pack, rubbing elbows with defending champion Sean Trott, 2025 runner-up Ryan Outerbridge, Dennis Mbelenzi, and newly minted Swan’s Legend Series champ Kallan Richardson.
Choosing to spend his energy early rather than conserve, Smith surged over White Hill, dragging Outerbridge along for the ride as Mbelenzi, Trott, and Richardson slipped into the rearview.

Another burst up the incline near Port Royal School put out Outerbridge’s fire, and with Smith still hammering, the race was all but sewn up before the notorious Burnt House Hill even loomed.

Harbour Road and the streets of Hamilton became Smith’s victory parade, as he broke the tape on Dutton Avenue in a course-record time of one hour, 10 minutes, and 49 seconds.
Outerbridge (1:15:06) hung tough for yet another silver, while five-time winner Lamont Marshall (1:15:42) kicked hard to reel in Mbelenzi, Trott (1:16:58), and Richardson (1:16:35), nabbing third place with a late flourish.

The women’s race followed a similar script, with Maddie Durkin in command from the first stride to the last.

Durkin opened a 100-metre gap cresting Fort Scaur and never once glanced over her shoulder, powering across the line in 1:27:56.
Christine Dailey (1:28:49), just three months removed from welcoming a baby girl, summoned a late surge to claim second, while Teresa Ruiz (1:31:25) matched her with a gutsy burst to snatch the final podium spot.
