Smith barely misses the cut at Butterfield Bermuda Championship

‘Close but no cigar.’

Bermuda’s Camiko Smith narrowly missed making history as the first local to make it through to the weekend at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Cours.

Needing just to achieve an even par second round to eclipse the projected cut of one-under-par Smith came up agonisingly short as he, while standing at even par, bogeyed the 18th, his final hole thus missing his target by a mere two strokes.

Despite his failure to qualify Smith remained upbeat regarding his play against a tough field of full-time, touring professionals, noting that he and other locals desperately needed more opportunities to venture overseas to play with seasoned pros.

“I feel pretty good,” said Smith, whose combined two day scores of 69 and 74 (143) left him one-over-par. “I’m very positive about what’s going on with my golf game.

“I just hope that as Bermudians we have more opportunities outside of Bermuda to do this, whereas we’re using this tournament to get people invites to other events.

“Maybe smaller event like Korn Ferry (Tour). We need that and don’t have that.

“We have one event in Bermuda and that’s it. We need to play more at a higher level to raise the overall standard.”

Smith had a spectacular finish to his first round, which had been suspended late Thursday due to darkness, as he fired birdies on seven eight and nine to place himself in good stead at two-under.

However, the talented Bermudian gave it all back with interest on the opening nine of his second round, with bogeys at the 3rd, 4th and 8th and a double bogey at eight.

Eric West and Nick Jones, the other Bermuda entrants likewise missed the cut, with West finishing three-over and Jones five-over.
