Sir John Swan and Suzie Aurrda announced as Independent candidates in General Election

Former Premier and National Hero, Sir John Swan, has declared his intention to run as an independent candidate in next month’s General Election.

He made this announcement today at the Spanish Point Boat Club, where Suzie Arruda was introduced as an independent candidate for C19 Pembroke West.

As the island’s longest-serving premier, Sir John will contest the Smith’s North C10 seat, having previously engaged in a by-election last year against the Progressive Labour Party’s Lindsay Simmons and the One Bermuda Alliance’s Robert King, who emerged victorious.

During a press conference attended by Ms. Arruda, Sir John stated: “I hope the people in Smith’s North understand that this is not about party politics, nor is it about John Swan. This is about Bermuda and its residents, addressing what I see as both a local and an international issue.”

The National Hero expressed his intention to mentor young independent candidates to help steer the island “back on track.”

Ms. Arruda, a business professional who previously collaborated with Sir John, reflected on her motivations prior to her candidacy announcement. When asked what inspired her to run in Constituency 19, where Jache Adams won for the Progressive Labour Party in 2020, she responded: “Bermuda currently needs leaders who listen. They aren’t paying attention to the people; they must listen and act on the community’s requests, prioritizing the citizens over political parties.”

She added, “I believe that by collaborating, we can build a community that is visible, heard, and ultimately prosperous.”

Ms. Arruda expressed her eagerness to engage with constituents in Pembroke West and announced plans for a town hall meeting on January 22 at the Spanish Point Boat Club.
