TNN News understands that significant internal developments are taking place within Bermuda’s Department of Immigration, with a number of staff members reportedly placed on administrative leave.
Information reaching TNN indicates that the developments follow concerns regarding the working environment and the overall management and operation of the Department.
There are some internal grievances that were raised by a number of staff that were forwarded to the leadership by one of the managers.
Some of the grievances revolve around one person who is believed causing strife amongst colleagues by making multiple accusations of bullying harassment etc, and causing individuals to walk on eggshells and management doing nothing to resolve the issues.
At the center of many of the issues is the department heads.
Some of those persons on administration leave are responsible for work permits, status, passports. Depending on the length of this process Bermudians will fill the effect of this shortage of staff.
The Department of Immigration is a critical part of Bermuda’s public administration, providing services that directly impact individuals, families, businesses and the wider economy. Developments of this nature within such an important government department are therefore a matter of public interest.
TNN has reached out to the relevant authorities seeking clarification regarding the situation, below is the response from the Minister of Economic and Labor.
“The Ministry of Economy and Labour can confirm that an internal investigation is underway and that a number of employees have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with established Government procedures.”
“Given the ongoing nature of the investigation, the Ministry will not comment on personnel matters, the circumstances surrounding the investigation, or any other details that could compromise its integrity.
“The Department has implemented measures to ensure continuity of operations, including the processing of applications and responding to public inquiries, so that essential services continue while the investigation proceeds.
“The Ministry will not comment further on the investigation at this time.”
