A powerful lightning and thunderstorm system is currently sweeping across Bermuda, causing significant disruption to electricity service in the western end of the island. Belco has reported that some 2,191 customers are without power as a result of the storm.
According to Belco, the outages are spread across three areas, with one customer affected in Pembroke, one in Smith’s Parish, and a staggering 2,189 customers impacted in the Sandys area.
The timing suggests the outages may be directly linked to the heavy lightning strikes that battered the island just before 5:00 this morning. Residents across Bermuda reported intense flashes of lightning and loud, crackling thunder as the storm hovered directly overhead.
At this stage, Belco has not provided a timeline for full restoration, but crews are expected to be dispatched to assess the damage and begin repairs.
