School Custodians Take Sick Days to Protest Lack of Overtime Pay

Word coming to TNN suggesting that 40 school custodians called in sick Monday and Tuesday to protest not getting fully paid for their summer work.

According to one custodian who wishes to remain anonymous, custodians have not been paid overtime from working during the summer months or for the extra work that they do at schools due to staff shortages.

The reasoning they were given for the non-payment is that their overtime budget was utilized in another area.

“ I received a letter stating that we will get paid once all of the paperwork is finished, but that overtime was due during the summer and they still have not gotten paid,” the custodian said. “ These people are not listening to us and this is the first time that custodians have taken a stand against the department.”

According to the source, a particular Security firm have been doing custodial work at Dellwood Middle School and other schools while the actual custodians have been out.

Even though all custodians involved are members of the Bermuda Industrial Union (B.I.U.), they decided not to get the union too involved because they fear that the Government will again put the blame on them.

“ We wanted to get this situation out there because the public needs to know exactly what is going on,” the custodian said.

TNN has sought a response from Government on this matter and awaits a reply.
