Robin Tucker Addresses Key Concerns in Hamilton South During Early Polling

As early polling continued yesterday, Robin Tucker, the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) candidate for Hamilton South (Constituency 7), shared her insights on the pressing issues facing her community. Speaking with TNNs Trevor Lindsay, Tucker highlighted both national and regional concerns voiced by voters on the doorsteps.

• Key Issues on the Doorsteps

Tucker noted that constituents are focused on national issues such as infrastructure, the cost of living, and economic stability. She emphasized that these challenges are affecting communities across Bermuda.

However, Tucker also pointed out local concerns unique to Hamilton South, including calls to place overhead balcony wires underground. This would not only improve aesthetics but also enhance safety, especially during hurricanes, she said. Additionally, seniors have expressed a need for bus shelters to provide protection from harsh weather conditions throughout the year.

• Infrastructure Challenges and Financial Constraints

Discussing ongoing infrastructure projects, Tucker acknowledged concerns about the impact of underground trench work by BELCO, which has reportedly damaged some roofs in the area. The key is putting cables underground and ensuring they don’t have to be dug up every few years, she explained, emphasizing the importance of sustainable solutions.

On the issue of Bermuda’s financial state, Tucker admitted that finance is not her area of expertise but recognized the country’s s serious debt situation. We all know that money is in short supply, and we must spend the little that we do have wisely, she said.

• Evaluating Government Performance and Transparency

When asked about the performance of the current government, Tucker offered a balanced perspective. They haven’t done everything wrong, but there are certainly areas that could be improved,  she stated. She also acknowledged the Progressive Labour Party’s (PLP) strategy of running on past successes, noting that it is common for incumbent governments to highlight achievements during campaigns.

However, she expressed concerns about transparency, stating that some questions posed to the government have gone unanswered. There is limited transparency. If things were more transparent, then we might have a better idea of the situation, Tucker said, suggesting that an OBA victory might reveal undisclosed financial challenges.

• Looking Forward

As the race for Hamilton South continues, Tucker remains focused on addressing both the national and regional concerns of her constituents. Her commitment to improving infrastructure, supporting seniors, and advocating for financial transparency resonates with voters seeking practical solutions and accountable governance.

Early polling concluded yesterday as candidates continue to engage with voters. Robin Tucker’s campaign emphasizes a balanced approach to leadership, aiming to address both local needs and national challenges.
