Road Sobriety Checkpoints Scheduled Throughout The Weekend

As New Year’s festivities gear up for the weekend, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) have announced an increased presence on the roads.

Sobriety checkpoints will be set up in multiple locations across the city, running throughout the weekend and into New Year’s Day. This proactive measure is aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring safety for all road users during one of the busiest and most celebratory times of the year.

“Impaired driving is entirely preventable.” “We want everyone to enjoy the New Year, but it’s critical to do so responsibly. If you plan to drink, have a plan for a safe ride home.”

Officers will be enforcing a strict zero-tolerance policy for impaired driving, with increased patrols across major roadways and residential areas. The checkpoints are designed not only to deter drunk driving but also to remind the community of the importance of planning ahead.

Drivers and riders are strongly encouraged to arrange for a designated driver, use rideshare apps, or rely on public transportation to get home safely. Those found driving under the influence will face immediate consequences, including fines, arrests, and potential license suspensions.

“Our goal is not to ruin anyone’s night but to save lives,” the spokesperson added. “Every year, too many lives are lost because of drunk driving. This initiative is about prevention and ensuring that everyone makes it home safely to celebrate another year.”

With the anticipation of parties, and gatherings, police are urging everyone to think ahead. Whether attending a small get-together or heading to a major event, planning a safe ride home is essential.

Let this weekend be a time of celebration, not tragedy. Remember, the best way to ring in the New Year is responsibly.

Motorists are advised that road sobriety checkpoints will be in effect in all 9 parishes tonight, 27th December 2024 through Thursday, 2nd January 2025.

Please plan ahead and do your part by not driving or riding impaired. If you are intending to go out and socialise, make sure you have arranged for a designated driver, taxi or another responsible transportation service to get you to your destination safely.
