Delray Rawlins put Brazil to the sword, setting a new T20 scoring record, as Bermuda demolished the region’s minnows by 146 runs at National Sports Centre’s North Field yesterday.
The victory enabled Bermuda to top the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier A standings, confirming a place in the next round of qualifying for the 2028 T20 World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Rawlins was in top form throughout the weeklong event, scoring the format’s fastest half-century against Panama on Thursday, a 17-ball 52, which added to 68 runs from 32 balls against Bahamas and his lowest score of 17 against Belize.
On Saturday he again thrilled, scorching 121 from 66 balls—including 11 sixes and six fours—turning the boundary ropes into mere suggestions. The total bettered the previous record of 103 established by Kamau Leverock, making Rawlins the obvious choice for Man of the Match, with his overall prowess also earning him Man of the Tournament honours.
Batting first, Bermuda set an imposing target of 220, with Rawlins and opening partner Onias Bascome [17] immediately setting the tone with a 53-run opening partnership before the latter was bowled by Luiz Gabriel Moras.
