Rangers assault record book and Willow Cuts

Allan Douglas Jr smashed an unbeaten double century as part of a riveting fireworks display at Southampton Oval, where Southampton Rangers lit up both Willow Cuts and the record books.

Rangers set what is believed to be a record for runs scored in a 50-over match, tallying 557 in 47.5 overs. It is also believed that the 512-run margin of victory was the most ever recorded.

Douglas’ otherworldly power-hitting display made teammate Onias Bascome’s preceding century appear mundane.

For while opener Bascome’s 114 runs from 59 balls _ including 10 sixes and eight fours _ delighted, Douglas’ unabated attack entranced in its beauty and ruthlessness.

Spectators could ill afford to look away as every point outside the ropes became a target and fan safety a real concern.

Douglas hit 21 sixes and 15 fours during his unbeaten 80-ball stay at the wicket, the No 6 batsman eschewing singles against a Willow Cuts attack that might have wished they had stayed home.

Others who rendered bit-player performances in the Douglas concerto were Dalin Richardson (48) and Deunte Darrell (42), whose performances would have been noteworthy on any other Sunday.

Long beaten before their turn to bat, Willow Cuts waved the white flag the moment captain Ras Solomon Burrows (22)_and opening partner Sergio Raynor (10) departed.

None of the final nine batters registered more than three runs, with five not scoring at all and the team all out for 45.

Those taking wickets for Rangers included Douglas, who rounded out a remarkable day with figures of four for 18, while Delray Rawlins took four for four.

Rangers increased their league lead to 30 points over four teams, including Warwick, Somerset, St George’s and Bailey’s Bay.

Other Premier Division matches saw St George’s defeat St David’s by 163 runs, and Warwick beat Somerset by 43 runs.
