TNN News is following up on the Progressive Labour Party’s constituency 36, following last month’s report that then-chairman Graham Maule resigned his position amid allegations of financial impropriety.
TNN News has now been made aware of further concerns involving new applications for PLP membership.
According to information provided to TNN News, by a reliable source indicating the membership applications involve a prescribed fee, and concerns have been raised over an amount believed to be between $2,000 and $2,500 that has been unaccounted for.
TNN News is also inquiring whether an official investigation has been launched into the allegations surrounding former C36 chairman Graham Maule and the reported financial discrepancies.
PLP chairwoman Dawn Simmons was made aware of the allegations and that a high-level meeting was held to address the situation.
Our source has indicated that efforts were made to resolve the matter, including discussions about finding funds to cover the financial shortfall from the missing application forms.
The issue reportedly came to light after individuals of PLP’s C36 who had paid for membership began questioning why they had not yet received receipts or membership cards.
The latest concerns come as the PLP prepares for its leadership contest in October, with membership and eligibility becoming increasingly important.
TNN News also understands by a reliable inside source that PLP headquarters has been verifying email addresses connected to new membership applications, with staff reportedly contacting applicants to confirm that the email addresses provided are legitimate.
However, questions remain about whether the same level of verification is being applied to all new members being recruited into the party.
A new chairman has since been selected for C36, with Darwin Simons understood to have taken over the position.
Additional questions have also been raised concerning alleged exceptions involving individuals under the age of 16 being permitted to become members.
With new memberships potentially carrying significant weight ahead of the October leadership challenge, questions are being asked about who is ultimately responsible for verifying the bona fide status of individuals signing up new members.
In particular, are membership applications sponsored or endorsed by senators and Members of Parliament subjected to the same verification process as those associated with the two candidates currently contesting the PLP leadership?
TNN News has sought clarification from PLP headquarters on these matters and awaits a response.
The questions are straightforward:
•Has a formal investigation been launched into the allegations involving the former C36 chairman?
•Where did the reported missing membership application forms and funds go?
•Are all new membership applications being independently verified?
•And are the same rules being applied to every applicant and every person recruiting members?
TNN News will continue to follow this developing story and report any response received from the Progressive Labour Party.
