TNN understands that CCTV cameras located outside the Southampton Ranges Sports Club main gate and parking area have reportedly been out of operation for at least three weeks, raising serious public safety concerns amid the island’s ongoing surge in gun violence.
Sources indicate that during incidents that occurred in early May, footage was successfully retrieved from the area’s surveillance system. However, following Sunday night’s shooting incident, investigators were reportedly unable to access any footage because the cameras are currently not functioning.
TNN understands that technicians believed to be from a local company have been seen at the location over the past two weeks attempting to rectify the issue. Despite those efforts, questions remain about how long the cameras have been offline and why the system has not yet been restored.
The development is being described by many as alarming, particularly given Bermuda’s extensive CCTV infrastructure across the island. Concerns are now being raised over the overall operational status of the surveillance network.
Key questions being asked include:
How many CCTV cameras across Bermuda are currently functioning, and how many are out of service?
With gun violence once again becoming a growing concern in the community, residents and stakeholders alike are demanding accountability and transparency regarding the island’s surveillance capabilities and maintenance procedures.
TNN sought clarification from the Minister of National Security regarding the matter and the status of the broader CCTV system. Up to press time, a response had not yet been received.
As violent crime continues to trend upward, many are now asking when the island’s surveillance infrastructure will be fully operational and capable of assisting law enforcement in real time.
TNN will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
