Public Safety Concerns After Road Works Halted in Southampton

Disturbing news is coming out of Southampton this morning, as work on a major road resurfacing project near Port Royal Golf Course and Evans Bay has been abruptly halted.

According to reliable sources, the project, which began just yesterday, was stopped due to a reported lack of overtime funding for the Works and Engineering crew—this, despite the advice of senior road workers urging its continuation.

Frustration is mounting among the workers, who say the decision has left the road in “dangerous” conditions. Compounding the issue, today’s forecast predicts overcast skies and rain, which could make the already unstable surface even more hazardous.

Last night, concerns turned into real consequences. A member of the public contacted us to report an accident involving a motorcyclist who crashed along the unfinished stretch of road. The rider reportedly suffered fractured ribs and multiple lacerations to his arms, fingers, and legs.

While the Works and Engineering team has been praised for their efforts—resurfacing roads from Willowbank through to Port Royal in areas desperately in need—the situation left overnight, and now expected to remain through the weekend, has ignited public outrage.

Social media platforms have been filled with complaints from residents in the western end of the island, many asking why such a heavily trafficked stretch—spanning close to 300 meters—was left incomplete with no warning, no lighting indicators for nighttime drivers.

There is added concern as Bermuda is preparing to welcome tourists arriving by cruise ship, many of whom will be navigating the island’s roads on mopeds and motorcycles. Locals fear that the poor conditions could result in further accidents. We encourage road users to take precautions while traveling west in the vicinity identified in this article.

We have reached out to the Minister of Works and Engineering for comment and are awaiting a response on this latest development.
