Propaganda machinery increase as PLP Leadership Battle Turns Bitter

Since the announcement of court action by Curtis Dickinson against PLP Chair Dawn Simmons and General Secretary Patricia Basden, there have been at two anonymous letters sent to TNN, believed to have come from members of both the Hayward and Dickinson campaigns.

TNN has chosen not to publish these letters since we are unable to attribute them to anyone.

We can say that one letter suggests the expulsion of Mr. Dickinson from the PLP for taking legal action against both the party Chairperson and General Secretary.

The second letter, describes that legal action as necessary to ensure the party’s constitution is not departed from in the interest of political expediency in favour of one camp or the other.

Elsewhere TNN has submitted the following questions to outgoing party leader David Burt.

•Do you believe that showing support for one candidate over the other is unfair and could unduly influence the outcome of the upcoming leadership election?

•It appears that you favour Jason Hayward over Curtis Dickinson to be the next leader of the party. Is that true and if so why?

•Do you not think the impact of your perceived position in support of Mr. Hayward could create division the party?

•Do you not think you should at the very least appear to be impartial and not seeking to influence the outcome of the leadership election?

We have also submitted the following questions to Mr. Dickinson.

•Do you see the involvement of the courts as creating division within the party as has been suggested by some party insiders?

•Why did you not go the route of raising the issue at the next central committee meeting and having it thrashed out behind closed doors?

There have reportedly been calls for your expulsion from the party over your decision to file the injunction. How do you respond to that if true?

With both camps campaigning aggressively ahead of the October vote, what was once an internal political contest is rapidly becoming a highly public and contentious battle, with accusations and counter-accusations reminiscent of the increasingly negative tactics often seen during U.S. presidential campaigns.
