“A giant of the Caribbean Region,” remarked Premier David Burt today after news of the passing of Sir James Mitchell, former Prime Minister of St. Vincent & The Grenadines. “Born in Bequia, Sir James was a proud Vincentian and a man who led the Island nation as Prime Minister from 1984-2000.”
“His lifetime of public service is remembered fondly by the people of St Vincent & The Grenadines who surely will now keenly feel his loss. On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, I send our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as they mourn this tremendous loss.”
Sir James was educated at St Vincent Grammar School and continued his university education at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad and Tobago and at the University of British Columbia in Canada, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1955.
Mitchell worked with Government and in the Ministry of Overseas Development in London and as an agricultural research officer for the St Vincent Government.
