Possible Tornado Strikes St. David’s Damaging Home and Knocking Out Power

Residents in the eastern end of the island are recovering tonight after what is believed to have been a possible tornado touched down in St. David’s during heavy downpours and dangerous high winds earlier today.

TNN received reports this afternoon of intense weather conditions moving across the island, with wind gusts reportedly reaching between 55 and 60 knots. The severe system is believed to have caused significant damage to a house in St. David’s, where part of a home’s rooftop was torn away during the weather system over Bermuda.

Early reports suggest the damage may have been caused by a tornado briefly touching down in the area.

In addition to the property damage, several boats were reportedly ripped from their moorings amid the violent winds. TNN has received photographs from residents in St. David’s showing the damaged home and displaced vessels following the storm.

The rough weather also impacted electrical service across the eastern end of the island. Hundreds of BELCO customers were left without power during the latter portion of the day, with outage numbers believed to have climbed to approximately over 900 customers at one point.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether a tornado officially touched down, but investigations into the storm damage are expected to continue.
