Police Identify Letrae Doeman Fourth Fatal Shooting Victim of 2022

Police Identify Letrae Doeman, Fourth Fatal Shooting Victim of 2022
According to Acting Bermuda Police Service (BPS) Detective-Inspector Jason Smith, police received several 911 calls regarding gunshots that were heard in the Flatt’s Village area of Smith’s, directly outside of the Brightside guest apartments, around 1:10 a.m. on Friday, July 1.

Police on scene found an unresponsive young man lying on the ground and attempted to resuscitate him, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The young man was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

“ While officers at the hospital were dealing with the deceased man, another man appeared at the hospital also suffering from gunshot wounds,” Mr. Smith said during a press conference this
afternoon. “ That individual was treated, detained in the hospital for further treatment and remains there today, in stable condition.”

Mr. Smith confirmed the deceased person as 19-year-old Letrae Doeman, whose death marks the sixth murder and fourth fatal shooting this year, after 18-year-old Laje Franklin and 24-year-old Che Jennings in April and 22-year-old Keyoshe Robinson in May.

“ The investigation into the circumstances of the death and assault of these young men is an active police investigation,” Mr. Smith told the media. “ Four persons to date have been arrested in connection with this shooting, ranging from their late-teens to early-twenties. All four are currently in police custody and enquiries are ongoing.”

Mr. Doeman and the other young man who was shot were both traveling on the same motorcycle when this incident occurred. Mr. Smith and the BPS are asking the public to help them trace the movements of the two victims before the incident occurred. However, it is
believed that they were at the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club prior to being shot.
Police are also asking the public to help identify two men who were on a motorcycle, who are the main suspects in this case.

“ From our enquiries, we know that a number of vehicles were traveling around that particular area at the time of this shooting,” Mr. Smith explained. “ We know that there is a vehicle that
turned from Flatt’s Hill onto Harrington Sound Road at about the same time as the suspect bike was at that junction.”

He also confirmed that immediately following the shooting, a motorcar had stopped and the gunmen would have been in direct contact with that motorcar.

“ We have had success in the past where people have been arrested for possession of firearms in public places, so we would appeal for the public to come forward and communicate with us,”

Mr. Smith said. “ It is when the public and police work together that help us piece together these puzzles and make Bermuda a safer place.”
