Police confirm six firearms seized in 2025 and five persons shot dead since May

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) today held a press conference to address the recent surge in gun-related violence that has left five people dead and six others injured since May 1st, 2025.

Assistant Commissioner Antoine Daniels, who led the briefing, described the situation as “deeply troubling,” noting that while the number of confirmed firearm incidents this year is lower than in previous years, the accuracy and intent of shooters have tragically increased.

“Since May, we’ve recorded five murders and six attempted murders or firearm-related injuries,” Mr. Daniels said. “This is a disturbing trend that highlights the urgency and necessity of our intensified policing approach.”

Key Incidents in 2025

  • May 1st, Legends Bar Shooting – Gunmen entered the establishment around 10:30 p.m., killing 32-year-old Jasmin Smith and 29-year-old Shaquan Williams, and injuring three others.
  • August 12th, Court Street – 23-year-old Natrae Eversley and 18-year-old Nakai Robinson were fatally shot while congregating on Court Street.
  • September 16th, Dundonald Street – 37-year-old Janae Minors was killed inside a salon. Earlier today, a 24-year-old man was formally charged with her murder.

Operation Sentinel

In response, BPS launched Operation Sentinel, a targeted policing strategy aimed at disrupting organized crime. The operation includes:

  • Strategic stop-and-search patrols in high-risk areas.
  • Increased visible police presence, particularly on Court Street.
  • Execution of multiple search warrants under the Misuse of Drugs Act, Firearms Act, Criminal Code, and Police and Criminal Evidence Act.

So far in 2025, police have conducted 1,394 stop-and-searches, compared to just over 1,000 in the whole of 2024. They have seized six firearms this year, including four in the past two weeks, and made multiple arrests.

Arrests and Charges

  • One man has been charged with the September 16th murder of Janae Minors.
  • Two men remain in custody charged with the double murder at Legends Bar.
  • Two others are on police bail in connection with the Court Street murders in August.
  • Police have also made 80 arrests involving bladed articles this year, down from 34 such incidents in 2024.

Community Cooperation

Assistant Commissioner Daniels emphasized the importance of community involvement in tackling crime:

“Without the support of the public, our operations would not be as successful as they have been. We urge anyone with information to contact the police, Crime Stoppers, or a trusted officer.”

He also commended the efforts of BPS officers, who he said had been working tirelessly under difficult circumstances.

“Their hard work and dedication in recent weeks deserves recognition and praise. May it continue,” he added.
