POA Call For Full Investigation Into Department Of Corrections

An emergency meeting was held yesterday for corrections officers and several questions were raised about the way forward for the department with morale so low, poor facilities, and the latest announcement of a permanent Commissioner who has shown no signs of effective leadership after the former Commissioner Edward Lamb left abruptly for his eventual long awaited placement for the position he now holds.

The PLP has been at odds with every union during their tenure. The POA adopted the government’s mantra on “acting in good faith” on everything and tried to go about things in the proper way before running to the media to reveal everything untoward going on in Corrections.

At the end of the day the POA has been dealt a terrible injustice for both staff and inmates. An officer shared with TNN that if a full investigation were to be done on the Department of Corrections the government would be fully exposed.

As far as the appointment goes the POA made it clear in writing they didn’t want Mrs Joell-Benjamin at the helm but the PLP has had a way of disregarding and disrespecting its people since they became the government. Concerns were expressed in writing listing specific reasons why including situations involving unresolved matters of wrong doing and corruption under her watch which have done permanent and irreparable damage to officers and their families.

The POA has endured 4 years of her weak leadership and unfortunately nobody in the government would speak to it or address it and Dr Binns and his team have had the final say without one conversation with the POA and totally disregarding the POA documentation.
