PLP TURMOIL DEEPENS AS CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETING IS DECLARED “CLOSED

TNN BREAKING NEWS

More turmoil is emerging from Progressive Labour Party headquarters tonight, as growing dissatisfaction among party members and MPs surrounds a Central Committee meeting scheduled for this evening.

A notification circulated to Central Committee members on Sunday advised that the meeting would take place Monday, September 14, at PLP Headquarters in the Reginald A. Burrows Building.

According to that original notice, the party executive would provide an update on the ongoing court proceedings and seek instructions from the Central Committee regarding the party’s next steps.

The notice also stated that the special delegates conference previously planned for Monday had been postponed.

However, members say a subsequent notification sent at approximately 6:07 p.m. this evening (Monday) described tonight’s Central Committee meeting as a “closed CC meeting” — prompting anger and frustration among some members and MPs.

TNN News spoke with several individuals who questioned why the original notification did not indicate that the meeting would be closed.

One member questioned the decision, asking why a Central Committee meeting would be circulated to members if only certain individuals were ultimately permitted to attend.

Another member described the situation as similar to last week’s controversial meeting, when restrictions were reportedly placed on attendance and photography.

Members we spoke with also questioned the level of transparency and accountability surrounding the party’s handling of its internal affairs, particularly while the PLP remains embroiled in ongoing court proceedings concerning its membership and delegate issues.

One individual told TNN News that the meeting appears to be limited to branch members, the party executive, the party leader and caucus representatives.

There is also concern among some members that MPs and other Central Committee participants could arrive at headquarters only to discover that they are not permitted inside.

The latest development comes against the backdrop of a highly contentious period for the PLP, including legal proceedings involving Curtis Dickinson and others and the party’s leadership and Central Committee.

The disagreement over who should be permitted to participate in party meetings has already resulted in significant friction within the organisation.

Tonight’s latest notification is now adding another layer to that dispute, with some members demanding to know what is being discussed behind closed doors and why the wider Central Committee membership cannot participate.

TNN News understands that there is significant frustration among some members and MPs over the latest development.

The PLP has been approached for clarification regarding:

  • Why the original Central Committee notification did not identify tonight’s meeting as closed;
  • Why a subsequent notification was issued at approximately 6:07 p.m. stating that the meeting was closed;
  • Who is authorised to attend tonight’s meeting;
  • Whether all Central Committee members will be permitted entry;
  • What specific matters will be discussed and voted upon tonight.

As tensions continue to mount inside the Progressive Labour Party, TNN News will continue to monitor developments at PLP Headquarters and report any significant developments as they occur.
