PLP Leadership Contest Intensifies as Deputy Leadership Race Expands

The race to lead the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) is continuing to gather momentum, with TNN News learning that another contender has entered the contest for deputy leader.

Sources indicate that Tineè Furbert has now thrown her name into the race, joining Michael Weeks and Zane DeSilva in what is becoming an increasingly competitive contest. TNN News also understands that another potential candidate Lawrence Scott is considering entering the deputy leadership race, although that has not yet been confirmed.

The growing field of candidates comes as the PLP prepares for its Annual Delegates Conference in late October, where party delegates—not the general public—will elect the party’s next leader and deputy leader.

The leadership contest follows Premier David E. Burt’s announcement that he will step down as leader of the Progressive Labour Party. While he is expected to relinquish the party’s top position, political speculation continues that he will remain a Member of Parliament and could continue serving as Minister of Finance should Jason Hayward emerge victorious in the leadership race. No official confirmation has been provided regarding any future Cabinet appointments.

Behind the scenes, campaigning is intensifying. TNN News understands that both the Jason Hayward and Curtis Dickinson camps are actively recruiting new party members in an effort to strengthen delegate support ahead of the vote.

According to information received by TNN News, approximately 160 delegates are currently expected to determine who will become the next leader of the Progressive Labour Party and, ultimately, Bermuda’s next Premier.

TNN News has reached out to Progressive Labour Party headquarters for confirmation of the latest developments and is also seeking comment from Tineè Furbert regarding her reported candidacy.
