PLP Kicks Off First of Three Rallies with a Family Reunion Theme

With just 17 days remaining until the general election, the Progressive Labour Party (PLP), the incumbent government, held the first of three campaign rallies last night. TNN’s Trevor Lindsay spoke with Dawn Simmons, chairman of the PLP, who shared the party’s vision and strategy for connecting with Bermudians.

Under the theme of Family Reunion, Simmons emphasized the importance of unity, hope, and love. What we plan to do is bring the family together, she said. We want our people to feel hope and the love that the PLP can bring. Were calling the family out for our rallies.

The first rally, held in the western part of the island, saw a strong turnout with lively entertainment and engagement from local MPs. We want the people of Bermuda to see the talent we have and the diversity in our party, Simmons explained. We just saw great entertainment, and one of our MPs demonstrated her creativity. Our first speaker showcased diversity as well. We want people to know that the PLP is a diverse group of people with a focus on everyday Bermudians.

Simmons highlighted the party’s commitment to inclusivity. We have the most women candidates, but it’s s about everyone. When you look around the room, you’ll see everyday Bermudians. Even among our candidates, you’ll see diversity in abilities and backgrounds.

Looking ahead, the PLP plans to hold two additional rallies one in the central area and another in the east. Simmons acknowledged the challenge of engaging younger voters but emphasized the party’s renewed efforts.

We now have a young person as part of our team. After tonight, we’ll sit down and brainstorm ways to encourage more young people to come out, she said. This rally was quick off the blocks, but we’ll use the next week to spread the word and encourage families to bring their young people, particularly those aged 18 to 35, to hear messages from people their age.

As the campaign trail heats up, the PLP is banking on their family reunion theme to foster connection, engagement, and a sense of hope for Bermudians. With a renewed focus on diversity and inclusivity, the party aims to rally support from every corner of the island.
