Probation Revoked in $84,000 Drug Importation Case

A 22-year-old man from Pembroke has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after his probation was revoked for drug-related offenses that date back to March 2022.

Terique Smith, of Euclid Avenue, Pembroke, appeared in Magistrate’s Court where the court activated a previously suspended prison sentence following repeated breaches of his probation conditions.

Smith was originally charged with two counts of importing into Bermuda a quantity of substances containing cannabinoid Delta-9-terahydrocannabinol. At the time of the offenses, the drugs were valued at approximately $84,000 if sold by the gram, or about $29,000 if sold by the ounce.

Following his conviction, Smith was placed on probation instead of serving immediate custodial time. However, the prosecution told the court that Smith failed to comply with the terms of his probation. It was stated that he did not consistently attend scheduled appointments and repeatedly fell short of meeting probation requirements.

The probation officer confirmed that Terique Smith was in breach, citing non-compliance and a lack of adherence to supervision conditions. As a result, the court found that he had failed to take advantage of the opportunity given to him.

In light of the violations, the magistrate ordered that the original sentence be enforced. Smith will now serve 18 months in prison for the offenses.
