The story of Bermuda’s bronze medalist and national icon, Clarence Hill, continues to unfold as family members speak out about his ongoing battle with homelessness, deteriorating health, and lack of proper care.
In this second part of the interview, a close cousin of Hill shared deep concern about his current condition, revealing that his situation has worsened to the point where professional, around-the-clock assistance is urgently needed.
“Yes, he needs a senior care facility,” the cousin stated firmly. “He needs round-the-clock attention. His apartment wasn’t just taken from him, that’s clear. There are rumors out there, but they’re not true.”
According to the family member, Hill had previously been housed in a small upper-floor apartment — a living situation that became impossible for him to maintain due to his severe asthma and mobility challenges. Despite efforts to have him relocated to a ground-floor unit, none were available.
The cousin recalled that Hill spent almost a year in the hospital, during which time he lost his apartment. Efforts were made to secure alternative housing, but space within Bermuda’s care system remains limited.
“He had nurses visiting daily to administer medication,” the cousin explained. “But as his dementia worsened, those visits stopped. Eventually, he was admitted to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he’s been confined to a ward for over eleven months.”
The family expressed frustration that even as Hill’s closest relative, they were not permitted to take him on supervised day outings, despite offering to sign full responsibility. Hospital social workers reportedly cited his vulnerability as the reason for refusal.
The cousin also revealed ongoing attempts to coordinate with Hill’s brother, who resides in Atlanta, Georgia, about possibly relocating Clarence there for care. However, issues around documentation, health clearance, and travel restrictions have made that process complex.
“His passport and birth certificate are missing,” they said. “I’ve started the process to order a new birth certificate, but I still don’t know if he’s medically cleared to fly.”
Meanwhile, another family member — Hill’s son — has reportedly launched a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising funds to send his father to England for treatment. However, the cousin cautioned that such efforts may be premature.
“I haven’t been in contact with his son,” they admitted. “I think he’s jumping the gun because we don’t yet know what Clarence truly needs.
Legally Clarence is still married but separated from his wife who he very rarely sees, the cousin remains type lipped on these complications of his marital status.
What he needs now is for the Bermuda government to step in — to place him somewhere where he can get the care he deserves.”
The cousin’s account paints a sobering picture of a once-celebrated athlete now struggling in silence. They emphasized that Hill’s legacy as one of Bermuda’s sporting champions should not be forgotten amid his current hardship.
“Clarence is our bronze medalist champion. He put Bermuda on the map years ago,” they said passionately. “Let’s recognize him like that. He’s vulnerable, yes, but he’s still human. I would help a dog if I had to — and Clarence deserves at least that compassion.”
As his family fights to secure proper medical and housing support, Clarence Hill’s plight raises broader questions about Bermuda’s capacity to care for aging athletes and vulnerable citizens who once brought pride to the island.
For now, his cousin — and the community — continue to hold onto hope that help will come before it’s too late.
