As government schools across Bermuda reopened today following the long summer break, the return to classrooms has already been met with frustration, confusion, and disruption.
At West Pembroke Primary School, parents were reportedly irate after learning this morning that the school’s principal had been suddenly changed. The newly appointed principal, Mrs. Enid Furbert-Jacobs, previously served at Purvis Primary School. Parents say they had no prior notice of the change and were shocked to learn that the same principal many had sought to avoid last year by transferring their children out of Purvis is now leading West Pembroke.
“This feels like a slap in the face,” one frustrated parent told TNN. “We moved our children to West Pembroke for a fresh start, only to find out we’re right back where we started.”
Tensions at the school were compounded by reports of a teacher protest this morning, which allegedly left some students without instruction. Sources told TNN there was a shortage of staff for a P4 class, and at least one teacher did not report to work for various reasons.
Meanwhile, across the island, teacher shortages continued to be a recurring issue on this first day of school. Parents and students in multiple schools voiced concerns that classrooms were not fully staffed, raising questions about preparedness and planning by the Ministry of Education.
TNN has reached out to the Ministry of Education for comment regarding the principal change at West Pembroke, the reported teacher shortages, and this morning’s protest. We await their response on this developing story.
