Panthers deliver final statement at BSI

[Pembroke Panthers 217/2 defeated Sandys Spartans 159/7 by 58 runs]

Pembroke Panthers pounced on their maiden Bermuda Smash Invitational title Saturday, revealing the Sandys Spartans’ supposed menace to be more myth than muscle.

Having perfected the art of the chase all tournament, the Panthers made light work of Spartans’ captain Kamau Leverock’s gamble to put them in first, brushing off his strategy as wishful thinking.

What followed was a feeding frenzy against a bowling attack thinner than a Spartan’s patience, with Gerhard Erasmus spearheading a gluttonous run feast.

The Namibian dynamo capped his stellar tournament with a 54-ball century, while skipper Dominic Sabir’s unbeaten 79 helped the Panthers post a daunting 217 for two.

Though Chad Bowes looked ready to mount a chase, too few Spartans rallied behind the South African–born Kiwi to pose any real threat.

Delray Rawlins (39) and Akeem Jordan (24 not out) flickered briefly, but the Spartans’ hopes faded as quickly as they appeared.

In the end, it was Sabir, Erasmus and company left standing tallest on the BSI stage … champions, with the final word.
