Pair face drugs, weapons and money laundering charges in Magistrates Court

Chanel-Marie Bento, 43, and Shawn Simons, 46, appeared in Magistrates’ Court facing charges related to drugs, weapons, and possession of criminal property.

Since the charges are indictable, the defendants were not required to enter a plea, and the case will proceed to the Supreme Court. They also chose to waive their right to have the charges formally read in Magistrates’ Court.

Reports indicate that both Bento and Simons are charged with three counts of conspiring with others to import drugs, including cannabis, during an unspecified period leading up to August 31, 2022. Additionally, they face a charge of possession of heroin on that same date.

Bento, who resides in Sandys, is specifically charged with two counts of conspiring to import cannabis within the same timeframe. She is also facing two counts related to the possession of a Taser, allegedly occurring on February 28.

Simons, a resident of Hamilton Parish, is charged with possession of criminal money from January 1, 2020, to June 30, 2023, as well as possession of cocaine on August 31, 2022.

Magistrate Craig Attridge has adjourned the case until May 1 in the Supreme Court and released both defendants on $25,000 bail each.
