Owen Darrell C15 Celebrates Sandy’s

Although today’s Round the Island Powerboat Race was postponed due to foul weather and safety concerns involving thunderstorms and lightning, the spirit of celebration was alive at Sandy’s Dock in Devonshire.

The Honorable Owen Darrell , Minister of Tourism Transport Culture and spoke with TNN’s Trevor Lindsay about the importance of continuing with community events when possible, even in the face of unexpected setbacks.

“People would know, that’s kind of the energy that I bring—as long as it’s not dangerous,” Minister Darrell said. “When I plan events, I know people have made arrangements. I’d like to continue them on if we can. Unfortunately, because of safety, the sporting event has been postponed today, the powerboat race. But this is about the reopening of Sandy’s.”

Sandy’s, known by different names to different residents, has long been a staple of the Pembroke East community. The dock was damaged by a hurricane many years ago, but thanks to efforts led by the Honorable Jache Adams, it has been restored and beautified. Upgrades include fresh grass, new benches, and repairs to the dock itself—transforming the space into a welcoming hub once again.

“This is what the community has been asking for,” Darrell explained. “And when you’re able to deliver, it’s important to celebrate that with the people. Today, we’re just inviting the community down to enjoy, handing out hot dogs and drinks, so they can feel proud of this location and know that it’s here for them—not just in the summer, but all year round.”

Residents who attended the event said they were grateful to see a space so deeply tied to their community history restored to its full potential. With the improvements complete, Sandy’s now offers a place where families and neighbors can gather, whether to swim, relax, or simply watch the sunset over the water.

Even though the powerboat race was called off, today’s gathering highlighted resilience and renewal—showing that sometimes, celebration finds its place in the heart of the community.
