The U.S. Coast Guard has found debris from the missing medical transport aircraft that was carrying six people from Bermuda to Boston when it lost contact with the Federal Aviation Administration early Saturday, prompting a massive search off Nantucket, Massachusetts, a source familiar with the situation.
A major search-and-rescue operation is continuing tonight off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, after an air ambulance travelling from Bermuda to Boston reportedly disappeared from radar following an emergency early Saturday morning.
According to information received from Boston, the Gulfstream G100 air ambulance was carrying six people and was equipped for intensive-care medical transport when it encountered electrical problems and declared an emergency while approaching the Boston area.
Audio from Boston Center air traffic control captures controllers communicating with the aircraft and instructing the pilot to descend after the emergency was declared.
At approximately 1 to 2 a.m. Saturday, radar contact was reportedly lost and there was no further response from the pilot.
An air traffic controller subsequently asked another aircraft in the area to keep a lookout for the missing medevac.
The U.S. Coast Guard has since launched an extensive search operation involving aircraft and vessels. The search area is reported to be approximately 13 miles off Nantucket, in the vicinity of the offshore wind farm.
A flight-tracking map shows the search grid being covered by rescuers as crews continue to work through the night.
The Coast Guard station at Brant Point is among the agencies involved, with a lifeboat crew participating in the urgent search-and-rescue mission.
The Massachusetts State Police Marine Unit and other local agencies are also assisting in the operation.
The search is continuing by both air and sea, including during the overnight hours.
