Opening of the Independent Living Programme Facility

This is yet another example of the good that can be achieved for our citizens through collaborative effort and determination. As Minister Furbert so eloquently stated – this remarkable occasion for the Independent Living Programme.

Continuously protecting and preparing our most vulnerable populations is what this Government has committed to the people of our Island. While more work can and will be done towards what we strive to accomplish, I can state unequivocally that at every opportunity,
the Ministry of Public Works will be there to provide the necessary infrastructure support.

Therefore, when the Ministry of Social Development and Seniors first approached the Bermuda Housing Corporation in October of 2021 to help find a home to house and support
ILP clients, the Ministry, through the Bermuda Housing Corporation ably lead by Chairman MP Chris Famous and the Board – has provided 10 newly retrofitted rooms here at Garrison
View.

Each room has its own bathroom and refrigerator that provides the occupants with a greater sense of not only independence, but privacy as well. The smaller rooms are equipped with
murphy style beds while the larger rooms have a standard bed.

Mindful of the goal of this programme to assist with transitional living and preparation to take on the world, common areas have been included – a dining room, kitchen and laundry
facilities – to encourage comradery among the residents.

I am proud of what you will see here today and what it represents. I am certain this successful partnership within the Government can be replicated to further benefit our community’s
needs. I am mindful that this facility is unique in Bermuda and puts the Island on an equal footing with larger countries.

I commend Social Development and Seniors Minister Tinee Furbert and the Department of Child & Family Services for finally doing something about this urgent need to help our young
people. I also commend Mr. Blake Lambert, the Assistant Project Manager at BHC for the work and dedication he has committed to this project.
