Off-Duty Corrections Officer Rescues Elderly Couple During Attempted Robbery Feels Overlooked as Viral Social Media Video Misleads Public
An off-duty corrections officer found himself at the heart of a dramatic incident Wednesday afternoon on South Road. What began as a routine trip home quickly turned into a courageous act of heroism as he intervened in an attempted robbery involving an elderly couple. However, the officer, who chooses to remain anonymous, is now grappling with frustration as a circulating social media video suggests someone else was the sole hero of the ordeal.
• The Incident Unfolds
Around 1:45 p.m., the officer was leaving work and heading toward the Warwick playground on South Shore Road when he noticed a bike seemingly crashing into a wooden fence near the overpass. Initially assuming it was an accident involving tourists, he rushed over to help.
To his shock, he discovered a man assaulting a woman, holding her by the throat and hair while attempting to steal her purse. At that point, I threw my bike down and ran over to assist, the officer recalled.
As the perpetrator tried to escape, another driver blocked his path with a car, giving the officer an opportunity to act. I jumped on his back, and he fell to the ground, he explained. Moments later, another man from the regiment joined in, securing the perpetrator’s left arm, while a third bystander restrained his right arm.
The officer remained on the assailant’s back, ensuring he was immobilized until the police and ambulance arrived about 15 minutes later.
• The Viral Video Controversy
Despite his pivotal role in the rescue, the officer is disheartened by a video circulating on social media that portrays another individual as the sole hero. The footage, taken after the suspect was already subdued, shows a man arriving on the scene and helping to restrain the suspect.
For me, I don’t care about the praises because I do things from the bottom of my heart, the officer said. But to see that video going around as if this man solely did it all on his own, knowing that there was the original person who did the initial work that part was definitely distasteful.
According to the officer, the man featured in the video arrived only after the suspect was on the ground and restrained. It just doesn’t make sense he came in after the work was done, he explained, emphasizing that the video omits the critical moments of the struggle.
• A Selfless Act of Bravery
Reflecting on his actions, the officer maintains he would not change a thing. I would do exactly what I did. I’d risk my life again for the betterment of goodness and humanity. That’s what I strive for.
The elderly couple involved in the attack were longtime visitors to Bermuda. Thanks to his swift actions, they were protected from further harm. The officer’s heroism is a testament to his commitment to serving his community, even when off duty.
As the video continues to circulate, the officer hopes the full story will come to light. I just wish the gentleman in the video would have at least said once, I wasn’t the only one. But he smiled and acted like he did it all. That was very disrespectful.
In the face of public misconception, this officer’s bravery speaks louder than any video could portray. His actions, motivated purely by a desire to help those in need, are a powerful reminder of the selflessness shown by everyday heroes.
