Today, Noelle Young officially entered the political arena, announcing her candidacy as an independent for Constituency 14, Devonshire, in the upcoming January election scheduled for February 18. At a press conference held in the Devonshire Arboretum, Young passionately addressed the public, outlining her platform and vision for her community.
“I’m here to announce that I will be running as an independent candidate for Constituency 14, going up against Wayne Caines, who is, of course, the current representative for this constituency,” Young stated. She clarified that her campaign is not a personal attack against Caines, the president of Belco, but rather a challenge to what he represents. She criticized high energy prices and environmental pollution, citing Belco as a major contributor to the island’s environmental challenges.
Young’s connection to the Devonshire Arboretum is deeply personal. She shared stories of growing up in the area, her family’s ties to the park, and how it became a sanctuary during difficult times. “This place holds personal significance for me. My parents were married here, and my dad taught me how to train dogs in this park,” she reminisced.
Her platform emphasizes revitalizing and improving community spaces. Young called for the refurbishment of exercise equipment, the reinstallation of gazebos, and the addition of paved pathways to make the area more accessible. “Why are we using porta-potties? There used to be permanent toilets installed here,” she questioned, pointing to the need for sustainable infrastructure improvements.
Young also expressed frustration with inconsistencies in youth programs. Sharing her personal experience with a delayed start to her son’s Active Kids program, she called for greater accountability and better communication for such initiatives.
Beyond community spaces, Young advocated for the creation of a dog park, citing the importance of safe spaces for pets and their owners, as well as opportunities for children to engage in unique outdoor activities. She pledged support for local sports clubs, including Devonshire Recreation Club and the Police Club, as well as schools like Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy.
Young’s message to Bermuda’s youth was one of gratitude and encouragement: “Thank you for using your voices, for publishing on social media, and for sending articles to newspapers. It shows there are others like me who want to change Bermuda for the better.”
Young concluded by sharing her motivation for entering politics: her son. “I moved back to Bermuda because of my baby boy. But I realized Bermuda is not a safe place for children, and I want to change that.”
With her focus on community improvement, environmental responsibility, and youth safety, Young’s candidacy has already sparked conversations across the island.
