Bermuda College recently signed off on a transfer pathway agreement with Kentucky State University that will expand nursing opportunities for local nursing students from the associate degree right through to the post-graduate level.
College President, Dr. David Sam said Bermuda College is proud of the newly-inked partnership and anticipates the association will lead to additional mutual opportunities for other programmes at KSU. The University has also recently welcomed a new president, Dr. Koffi Akakpo. “May your confident and innovative leadership be the building blocks to newer and brighter horizons in nursing education for Kentucky State and Bermuda College students,” Dr. Sam stated. “We are always pleased about win-win collaborations that provide access and opportunities for our students and graduates.”
Dr. Akakpo agreed. “Kentucky State University is excited to partner with Bermuda College to create educational pathways for nurses looking to further their education and expand their career opportunities. This reflects our strategic priority of affordable access through increasing program offerings.”
In the agreement, graduates of Bermuda College’s Associate of Science Degree (Nursing) who have passed with a minimum of ‘C’, have successfully completed the NCLEX exam, and have an unencumbered RN license, will be able to transition into the third year of the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at Kentucky State University. In addition to the traditional 2 + 2 agreement, Bermuda students with an undergraduate degree in another discipline can also apply for the BSN at Kentucky State University.
Interim Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Bermuda College, Dr. Ali Arouzi took particular note of the training facilities that will be available to students. “Our students will be exposed to the state-of-the-art equipment in KSU’s simulation labs, including avatar and high-fidelity manikins. With partnerships such as these, the aim is for BC graduates to take advantage of more career opportunities and pursue leadership roles in healthcare settings in the future.”
Program Administrator for the School of Nursing at KSU, Dr. Mary Ellen Broaddus stated, “We welcome this opportunity and hope that we can provide an enhanced pathway of healthcare in Bermuda. Kentucky State University is probably the most diverse university in the state of Kentucky and I think for us, having (Bermuda’s nursing graduates) as a part of our institution, would be a win for all.”
While Director of the Nursing & Allied Health Division at Bermuda College, Ms. Kathy-Ann Swan, was pleased that the calibre of the local curriculum was recognised and accepted at KSU. “This agreement is a significant endorsement, and supports our vision for the Division to be recognised both locally and internationally.”
